This was a part of the Miku 1st Anniversary post too, but I decided it deserves a post of its own for its epic-ness.

Enjoyed the trailer? I sure did.

Project DIVA is a PSP game slated for release next year. And it features Miku as the main character, obviously.

Gameplay looks simple; keys (the four symbols) appear on the screen with a clock hand ticking down as each song plays, and when it’s made one complete revolution, you press the corresponding key to hit it and score.

To help you along, stars will wave down towards the keys and cross over them just as the clock hand finishes its revolution, so you can time your presses right.

There’ll be break points within the song (similar to Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan) where Miku poses depending on your current progress.

The score screen. Standard stuff, though the “Hyper”, “Change” and  “Replay Edit” buttons/indicators hint at more features.

You’ll also be given the opportunity to customise Miku’s room in your PSP with unlockable items. Not much I can say about this actually, except unlock-unlock-unlock. :)

The music in the game will be chosen from the Piapro community as part of a Sega x Piapro collaboration, but for all we know, they could go further and add more songs directly from NicoNicoDouga and whatnot.

I actually thought this game was going to include the VOCALOID2 software so you could compose your own songs. Alas, my dreams for a portable voice synthesizer have been dashed.

The song in the trailer is Strobo Nights by livetune. You’ll want to check out their album on my brother’s blog, it’s filled with good songs. One of its MADs below:

I personally think this game is an epic win. It’s basically marrying the following:

  • Rhythm-based games (e.g. Elite Beat Agents), my favourite kind.
  • Pet-based games (e.g. Tamagotchi?), though it’s only as far as decorating Miku’s room.
  • Hatsune Miku

Here’s a gameplay video released by the website. You can view it there by clicking on the fifth button you see…or you can view it right here. XD

As you might have guessed, I’ve been experimenting with embedding videos from external sources other than Youtube, so you guys can have a better experience. It seems to have worked so far…but leave a comment if it doesn’t.
