Dead computers is seriously annoying!!
Well, one can’t expect the unexpected, especially me when my laptop, Stellar, died in front of me.. I was in the midst of multi-tasking between blogging and chatting when the great “end” happened.. I was like OSHII- and then a long pause from me.. I was partially traumatized since this was quite sudden and that no major problem happened to her for the past 3 years..
Everyone, meet Stellar, my first laptop.. ^^
Yes, you heard me right.. I got this laptop when I joined Singapore Polytechnic as it was mandatory for Engineering students to have laptops in school back then ( Now its optional to all but it is still widely encourage.. -_-;; ).. I named her Stellar since it was when Gundam Seed Destiny was still ongoing in Japan and the show inspired me to have the name FARIZ ASUKA.. xD
Well, just by looking at the sheer size of the laptop can instill fear to some people.. Why?? Because it is the heaviest modern laptop in 2005.. It weighs about 3.1kg inclusive of the battery itself.. What a way for students to have backache problems after a couple of month..
Anyway, why was my laptop; Stellar died on me?? Although I wasn’t there when the incident which resultes in Stellar’s death, what I know is that there was a power surge in our home earlier in the day.. Even though I turned off the main power to the laptop, the power surge somehow HATEs my Stellar so much that well, short-circuited her..
Bettery wasn’t even attached to her because the battery is dead way earlier than this incident.. Rechargeable battery isn’t rechargeable anymore.. ^^;;
Because of this, I’ve decided to send it for repairs back at Acer Service Centre.. However, what I heard back then still shock me today.. The parts that my laptop have is OBSOLETE.. Even if they found a “re-conditioned” version,it would cost me about SGD$500.. Heck,so expensive just for a change of motherboard..
So I’ve come up with a plan to prevent such thing from happening again.. First of all,I got myself a new extension cord unit with a Power Surge Protector..
It looks quite similar to a normal extension cord, just that it has this compartment just to prevent a power surge from killing any machines connected to the extension cord..
Its been hectic on the day Stellar died.. I tried my very best to revive her but it was in vain.. Well, I am really going to miss her as she was the only thing that got me hooked to blogging in the first place.. Without her, I would not have taken interest in anime..
I shall take my free time to take a look around for bargains for new laptops that are for sale on Forums or even EBay.. I am also going ahead to get myself a Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) machine so that the laptops (usually without battery attached when at home) does not shut down instantly, leading to loss of data to even hardware failure..
So what do you do to prevent a KILLER POWER SURGE from ruining your precious hardwares?? =D

The laptop was too Stellar for your home power. They decided to come up with an ebil plan to get rid of it in a bid to get closer step by step to taking over the world.

@ Anonymous Coward: Buying a new laptop is a better option but since my budget isn’t quite high, buying a 2nd hand does seem like a good deal, I think.. ^^;;
Yeah, will get a UPS just for extra protection.. xD
Glad it didn’t happen to mine. >.>
For once, I’m happy polytechnic life drags me away from home.
*Prays for Stellar*

@ TheFuzzy: Oh well, Stellar has lived past the standard living span of a laptop which is 3yrs.. it is a pity that she part with me already.. x . X
