I was told that there was another schoolgirl-centered anime, and since I can never get enough of those, I decided to give it a shot. Especially since Toradora already ended.

Episodic included, so spoilers ahead.

So after a certain job (which took about two sleepless nights, thankfully not in a row), I watched me an episode.

I felt I was getting vibes from other anime series throughout the episode.

Let’s break the plot down a bit. K-ON! is about 4 girls who try to save their light music club from being wiped off the register. Already, in that one sentence, I see similarities to two other series.

“4 girls” = Lucky Star? I can even match the personalities (though obviously they’re not 100% similar):

  • Yui Hirasawa – Tsukasa Hiiragi
  • Tsumugi Kotobuki – Miyuki Takara
  • Ritsu Tainaka – Konata Izumi
  • Mio Akiyama – Kagami Hiiragi

When I think about it though, Ritsu feels more like a Haruhi than a Konata, especially since she appears to be one of those “OK I GO THIS WAY ALL FOLLOW ME”.

“save their light music club” = Clannad? You know, the whole “save the drama club” plot in the first season?

Also, when I saw Yui’s elementary school photo, a tiny bell rang somewhere deep inside my head, and the moment I saw Yui dashing out of her house, I immediately thought “Kannagi”. The art style and animation is just so similar, you can’t miss it.

I’m not sure if I missed something, but that series was animated by (ex?) employees from KyoAni, so I guess I shouldn’t be too surprised. Would love it if someone shed some light on this. :3

SATSUGAI

Oh, and they even managed a DMC reference. lol

Vibes and references aside, K-ON! definitely has that potential to impress…or to fail completely. I hope the latter doesn’t happen, since I already like where the story’s heading.

So repeat after me: Kannagi + Lucky Star + MUSIC = K-ON!

And the episode itself? Well, to summarise, Yui’s just entering high school, and has to find a club to join (according to her friend Nodoka). On the other hand, Ritsu wants to join the light music club along with Mio (by tearing apart her club application form), but finds out that all the old members had already graduated and the club was in danger of suspension. Unless at least 4 members join the club.

Ritsu decides to take over the club as president, dragging Mio along with her, and manages to rope in Tsumugi (who originally planned to join the choir) as well. The three of them decide to publicise the club, and somehow, it (only) attracts Yui’s attention.

Yui decides to join, but changes her mind at the last minute, but Ritsu, Mio, and Tsugumi do everything they can to stop her from leaving, though she has zero talent in music. They convince her to observe a mini-performance, and Yui comments that the band isn’t all that great. However, she decides to join anyway, since she feels that it looked fun enough for her.

Nodoka’s surprised upon hearing that Yui decided to join the club, and realises the poor girl has no idea what she’s gotten herself into, to the point that she thinks guitars cost 5,000 yen.

This episode was also the first ever in my life that I thought “retarded moe”. Watch it and you’ll see why.

Also, OP and ED songs are nice, but I won’t say anything more, since I’d be treading on Fariz’s turf.

Here’s a wallie just for overnight fanboys of the show:

I recoloured it for myself though; not a great fan of pink. I prefer brown kthx.

Also, I’ll be doing episodics for K-ON!, since I feel the need to have a goal in mind, and this anime blog is in some serious need of some anime reviewin’.

Enjoy~! ( ^.^)/
