As Fuzzy had posted earlier, me and Fuzzy went down to VivoCity to take a look at the latest games…

I have to apologize in advance since the above photo was the only one I took; was too busy having fun. Hopefully this post won’t be a tl;dr one for you…

The event was actually smaller than expected; they held it along one of VivoCity’s “corridors”, and the space was so (relatively) tiny the organizers had to host the gaming and shop sections a distance away from each other.

That little thing aside, I got the chance to try out the games there, so here’s a few thoughts about the games I tried (some of which were tucked away in an M18 section):

Assassin’s Creed 2

While the gameplay is similar to the original, it certainly is harder. For one thing, there were more factions, and though I heard you could choose to follow a faction, I didn’t play far enough to get to that point. You could also use dual retractable blades, one on each hand, to perform double silent kills, allowing you to get rid of guard patrols more easily.

There also seem to be allies assisting you, since I had a few random guys killing guards for me while I was running along the rooftops of the city. I was too caught up in the action to care though. ^_^

Forza Motorsport 3

It plays like a typical racing game, though for the event they set it up such that you had a first-person “realistic” view of the race track. They used a steering wheel and pedal set to emulate the controls, and 3 large HD LCD TV screens (placed in a concave manner) to display the track.

To me it felt like LG shameless advertising, but I didn’t mind. It certainly impressed me and the crowd that formed to watch everyone who played..

DJ Hero

It’s almost like the Guitar Hero games in which you try to hit notes on a scrolling track, but instead of a band set you had a turntable, which you have to spin while mashing the buttons to the rhythm of the remix you’re playing.

To be honest I wasn’t used to playing the turntable (since the last game I tried was Rock Band, which I currently own), but I guess with time this game could be fun for me too. You can still connect a guitar to the game and play along, though. ^_^;

Saboteur

In this game, you have to (surprise!) sabotage the German forces occupying your country in various missions. It’s a bit like the old Splinter Cell games in which you had to sneak about to achieve your objectives, and by doing so you slowly gain “happiness” for sectors in your area. In the game, they call it the Will to Fight factor, or WtF for short. LOL

If you enter an area with a low amount of WtF, the game will turn black & white, as opposed to entering a coloured area with high WtF. The game was slightly hard but fun nevertheless, though Fuzzy has said the game had controller issues during GCA ’09. I didn’t see any problems though. ^.^

WET

WET is a fast-paced gun ‘n slash game that will have you killing people left, right and center. You play a  female hired assassin who dual wields pistols (or uzis and other weapons) and goes around killing people for the sake of money and advancing a storyline. That’s all you need to know, really..

Strange thing about the game is that Rubi (the assassin) doesn’t seem to know how to be able to use both her guns at the same time while running around, though she’s free to use them when she’s doing a side-jump, Max Payne style. She’s also able to enter a “Rage Mode” at certain points in the game, which makes her faster and deadlier. Rage Mode gameplay below:

All that aside, the soundtrack is very cool in my opinion. I would prefer Miku doing the gunning and slashing though.. ^_^

Left 4 Dead 2

I didn’t expect this here, since Fuzzy has said there was only going to be trailers of the game. I played the first game quite a bit with my friends and Fuzzy, so trying out the sequel was a whole new experience to me..

The graphics seem to be improved, and the difficulty has been increased slightly for more realism; for instance, regular Infected keep spawning slowly, so you’ll always have someone to shoot at at least once per few minutes. There are also new Special Infected too, such as the Charger, which feels like half a Tank, and the Spitter, which is like a Boomer but damages you instead of attracting a horde of Infected. There’s also the Jockey, which jumps on you like a Hunter but is able to control your movements while hanging on.

I also found an armored Infected (wearing SWAT armor); bullets fly off his body and head, and the other survivors commented that you can only shoot them in the back. Punching before shooting is probably your best bet.

There are also new items such as Boomer bile, which lets you attract a horde of Infected to a target just like regular Boomer bile, and the defibrillator, which lets you revive dead survivors. I didn’t manage to test it though since none of the bots managed to die. Melee weapons are also another addition, letting you swing in a wider angle without any delay penalty for abuse.

The only maps the demo had were 2 levels from the campaign The Parish, so the entire demo took place in the day. The Witch, instead of sitting on the ground crying, will walk about. There was also a Crescendo Event which forced you to run towards an alarmed tower to shut the alarm off while fighting an endless wave of Infected. I had to leave my bot buddies behind to do this. ^_^;

Overall, the event was better than I expected, mostly due to Left 4 Dead 2, which a lot of people I know must be rooting for, especially Fuzzy. He said about 3 Xboxes there RROD’ed almost at the same time, so they had a mass replacement before anyone noticed. Too bad he didn’t manage to get a picture though..

Well, I guess it’s back to NS for me. By the time this post comes out I should be in camp again. See you all at AFA!
